Children of Incarcerated Parents: An Overview

Children of Incarcerated Parents CoverRelease date: 10-23-2014

The experiences of and care for children who have one or both parents in jail or prison raise important issues for families, policymakers and the general public. In 2007, 1.7 million children in the United States had a parent in prison. 1 Children of incarcerated parents experience challenges both unique to parental incarceration and similar to children with other life stressors. This brief provides an overview of issues related to children with incarcerated parents and a description of several evidence-based interventions targeted at children of incarcerated parents.
