Parental Job Loss and the Implications for Children

Mark Votruba, PhD
Associate Professor
Weatherhead School of Management

Tuesday, March 20, 2012
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Mandel Center for Nonprofit Organizations (MNO) Room 115

Jobs are currently at the forefront of both economic policy discussions and everyday lives in the United States and in Northeast Ohio. While it is well established that the shock of job loss can have long-term financial, social, and health consequences for displaced workers, there is very little data on how parental job loss impacts children. In his upcoming lecture, Dr. Mark Votruba will discuss his work on estimating the causal effect of parental job loss on children’s school performance in Norway. Dr. Votruba will be joined by community respondents who will discuss the implications for policy and practice here in the United States.

Dr. Mark Votruba is an Associate Professor of Economics in the Weatherhead School of Management at Case Western Reserve University. His research endeavors have focused on questions surrounding public policy and health economics, such as how plant downsizing affects the welfare of employees and their children and how the use of public support programs is affected by use among one’s peers. Dr. Votruba is also interested in how medical resources are allocated in the U.S. health care system.
