Schubert Policy Director Leads Workshop on School Discipline Practices at OACCA Advocacy Conference

Posted on May 1, 2014

On April 29, Schubert Policy Director, Gabriella Celeste, along with Monica Ellis from the Ohio Office of Criminal Justice Services and Jane Wood from OhioGuidestone, conducted a workshop on school discipline practices at the Ohio Association of Child Caring Agencies, Inc.’s (OACCA) 2014 Advocacy Conference.

The workshop highlighted how current Zero Tolerance policies have helped to fuel dropout rates and a school to prison pipeline. The workshop also presented current research on Ohio school discipline and victimization data, the significance of education in healthy child and adolescent development, the impact of school exclusionary policies such as out-of-school suspension and expulsion, and promising and evidence-based approaches to effective school discipline and positive school climate. A review of current federal and state supportive school discipline policy efforts to improve school engagement and success for all students was also covered.
