Faculty Receive MacArthur Grant to Study Housing’s Impact on Learning

Faculty associates Claudia Coulton, Lillian F. Harris Professor of Urban Research & Social Change and co-director of the Center on Urban Poverty & Community Development at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, and Robert Fischer, co-director of the Center on Urban Poverty & Community Development at the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences, recently received a $300,000 grant from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation to study how housing and neighborhood conditions affect young children’s school performance.

The study will explore how neighborhood conditions such as foreclosures, vacant houses, and declining neighborhoods affect children’s school readiness and early literacy, comparing property records and school performance data for children in the Cleveland Metropolitan School District. Coulton’s previous research has examined how foreclosures impact children, families and neighborhoods. The grant is part of the MacArthur Foundation’s five-year, $25 million research investment in its “How Housing Matters to Families and Communities Initiative.” Coulton and Fischer’s study was one of six chosen from 300 proposals to receive funding this year. All of the grants chosen use existing data to better gauge the effectiveness of housing policies and related programs.
